Trying to play Fortnite on a Mac and can’t find it? You’re not missing anything — Fortnite no longer runs natively on macOS. Here’s exactly why, and the legitimate ways you can still play Fortnite on a Mac today.
Does Fortnite work on Mac? The short answer
No — there is no native Mac version of Fortnite Battle Royale. Epic Games removed Mac support in 2020. You cannot download and install Fortnite directly on macOS the way you can on PC, console or Android. However, you can still play it on a Mac through cloud gaming (streaming it in a web browser), which works on any modern Mac.
Why was Fortnite removed from Mac?
In August 2020, a legal dispute between Epic Games and Apple led Apple to revoke Epic’s developer account. Because the Mac version was signed through that account, Epic could no longer update it. Fortnite was locked at an old version (v13.40) and then stopped working on macOS entirely. Apple and Epic remain at odds over App Store rules, so a native Mac client has not returned.
How to play Fortnite on a Mac (cloud gaming)
Instead of installing the game, you stream it from a remote server straight to your browser. Your Mac just needs a stable internet connection. The two best free/affordable options:
- Xbox Cloud Gaming (free): Go to xbox.com/play in Safari or Chrome, sign in with a free Microsoft account, and search for Fortnite. It’s free to play and works on Mac, no Xbox required.
- NVIDIA GeForce NOW: Create an account at nvidia.com/geforce-now, link your Epic Games account, and stream Fortnite in your browser. There’s a free tier (with wait times) and paid tiers for longer, higher-quality sessions.
Both run Fortnite in a browser tab on macOS — including on Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) and Intel Macs. A game controller or keyboard-and-mouse both work.
What you’ll need for the best experience
- A reliable internet connection (wired or strong Wi-Fi; ~15+ Mbps recommended).
- A supported browser — Safari, Chrome or Edge.
- Optionally a Bluetooth controller for more comfortable play.
What about Boot Camp or a Windows PC?
Older Intel Macs could run Windows via Boot Camp and play Fortnite that way, but Apple Silicon Macs (M1 and newer) cannot run Boot Camp, so that’s no longer a general solution. For most people today, cloud gaming is the simplest and best way to play Fortnite on a Mac.
Bottom line
There’s no native Mac download, but you are not shut out — free cloud gaming through Xbox Cloud Gaming (or GeForce NOW) lets you play full Fortnite Battle Royale on any modern Mac in minutes. Once you’re in, check the live Fortnite Item Shop and our beginner’s guide to playing Fortnite.
