Fortnite is one of the most widely available games in the world — it runs on almost everything except one notable holdout (Mac, more on that below). If you’re wondering which devices can play Fortnite, what you need to run it, and how to actually get started, this guide covers every platform in 2026.
Every platform Fortnite runs on
- Windows PC — the full native game via the Epic Games Launcher. Free to download.
- PlayStation 5 & PlayStation 4 — native, free from the PlayStation Store.
- Xbox Series X|S & Xbox One — native, free from the Microsoft Store.
- Nintendo Switch (and Switch 2) — native, free from the Nintendo eShop.
- Android phones & tablets — native, installed from the Epic Games app (and some device stores), not always the Google Play Store.
- iPhone & iPad — available again in the EU through the Epic Games Store, and worldwide via cloud gaming in a browser.
- Mac (macOS) — no native version since 2020 — but you can still play through cloud gaming. See our dedicated guide: Does Fortnite work on Mac?
- Cloud gaming (any device) — Xbox Cloud Gaming, NVIDIA GeForce NOW and Amazon Luna stream Fortnite to Macs, low-end PCs, phones, tablets, smart TVs and browsers.
PC system requirements (do you need a gaming PC?)
One reason Fortnite is so popular is that it runs on modest hardware. You do not need an expensive gaming rig — especially with Fortnite’s Performance Mode, which lowers the demands significantly.
- Minimum (Performance Mode): a recent dual-/quad-core CPU, 8 GB RAM, and integrated or entry-level graphics on Windows 10/11. Many everyday laptops can run it.
- Recommended: a Core i5/Ryzen 5 class CPU, 16 GB RAM, and a dedicated GPU (e.g. GTX 1060-class or better) for smooth high-frame-rate play.
If your computer is older or it’s a Mac, cloud gaming sidesteps hardware requirements entirely — the game runs on a remote server and streams to your screen, so all you really need is a solid internet connection.
The Mac situation, briefly
Apple and Epic Games fell out in 2020, Apple revoked Epic’s developer account, and the native Mac version stopped working. There is still no Mac download today. The good news: Xbox Cloud Gaming is free and lets you play full Fortnite Battle Royale in a browser on any modern Mac (Apple Silicon or Intel). The full walkthrough is here: how to play Fortnite on a Mac.
How to start playing (whatever your device)
- Get the game. On PC, console, Switch or Android, download Fortnite free from that platform’s store. On Mac or weaker hardware, open a cloud-gaming service in your browser instead.
- Make an Epic Games account. It’s free and carries your progress, skins and friends across every platform — start on console, continue on PC.
- Pick a mode. New players should start with Zero Build battle royale — no building to learn, just movement and aiming.
- Learn the basics. Land, loot a weapon and shields, stay inside the safe circle, and use cover. Our full beginner’s guide to playing Fortnite walks through your first match step by step.
Is Fortnite cross-platform?
Yes. Fortnite has full cross-play and cross-progression — players on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, mobile and cloud all play together, and your account (level, V-Bucks, cosmetics) follows you everywhere through your Epic Games login. So it genuinely doesn’t matter much which device you start on.
The bottom line
Fortnite plays natively on Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and Android, returns to iPhone in the EU and via cloud everywhere, and reaches Mac and low-end devices through free cloud gaming. Pick your device, make a free Epic account, and drop in. When you’re set up, check today’s cosmetics on the live Fortnite Item Shop.
